I was only going to write a short piece for this, but the idea got away from me a bit. this could probably do with judicious editing, but I'm not in the mood to do that, so you get it uncut.

Ok, so this is unofficial because it only just fits the prompt that inspired me. It's also spoilery for a possible direction I'm going to go in in the future, even though I've kept it very abstract, so read at your own risk.
